Alumni Stories: Holly Sorenson鈥檚 Journey from 91传媒 to Community Health

LA GRANDE, Ore. 鈥 Holly Sorenson never expected her Bachelor of Music degree from 91传媒 (91传媒) to pave the way to a career in community health. Yet, more than a decade after graduating in 2013, Sorenson has blended her passions for music and helping others into a career that transforms lives.

As the Outreach Programs Manager at the Northeast Oregon Network (NEON), Sorenson leads teams dedicated to connecting individuals with healthcare resources and community services. She credits her time at 91传媒 for fostering a spirit of adaptability and a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives鈥攕kills she uses daily.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 set out to work at a nonprofit,鈥 Sorenson said. 鈥淏ut during my final year, I completed an internship with NEON through a community service program. That experience opened my eyes to a field I鈥檇 never considered.鈥

A Path to Purpose

During her internship, Sorenson impressed her team with her quick learning and ability to build connections. By the time she graduated, NEON offered her a staff position, and her role grew over the years. Today, she works with community health workers who help clients navigate complex systems, such as the Oregon Health Plan, and access vital resources like transportation and language interpretation.

Her team鈥檚 efforts have significantly impacted rural communities by reducing healthcare barriers and empowering individuals to utilize their benefits.

鈥淥ne of the most rewarding moments is seeing the relief on someone鈥檚 face when they realize they鈥檙e getting the help they need,鈥 Sorenson said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a reminder of why this work matters.鈥

Music and Mardi Gras: A Balancing Act

While her career demands focus and dedication, Sorenson hasn鈥檛 left her music behind. She performs regularly with Bag of Hammers and the Depot Street Syncopators, local ensembles known for their energetic shows and community spirit.

鈥淢ardi Gras has become such a rich tradition for us,鈥 Sorenson said. 鈥淭he music, rooted in cultural expression and resilience, is a yearly reminder of how art brings people together.鈥

On March 4, Sorenson will take the stage with the Mardi Gras Band for their annual celebration. Reflecting on her journey, she sees parallels between her music and her work at NEON.

鈥淏oth are about connection,鈥 Sorenson said. 鈥淲hether it鈥檚 through a song or helping someone access healthcare, it鈥檚 about reaching people where they are.鈥

A Foundation at 91传媒

Sorenson started at 91传媒 in 2009, drawn by the university鈥檚 strong music program. She graduated in 2013 with a Bachelor of Music degree, having gained exposure to diverse musical styles and cultures that shaped her as a musician and a person.

鈥淢y time at 91传媒 helped me develop a deeper understanding of people and their stories,鈥 Sorenson said. 鈥淭hat foundation has been invaluable in my work with underserved communities.鈥

Advice for Aspiring Students

Sorenson encourages current and prospective students to embrace exploration and adaptability. 鈥淵ou don鈥檛 have to know exactly where you鈥檙e headed,鈥 she said. 鈥淏e open to discovering new paths鈥攜our experiences will guide you.鈥

For those considering a creative career, her advice is simple: 鈥淓njoy it. Don鈥檛 worry about being perfect. Dive in and let your passion lead you.鈥

As Sorenson prepares for another busy year of community outreach and music performances, she remains committed to blending her talents and passions to make a difference.

鈥淲hether it鈥檚 in the office or on the stage, it鈥檚 about bringing joy and support to others,鈥 Sorenson said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 what drives me every day.鈥
