LA GRANDE, Ore. 鈥 91传媒鈥檚 Spring Symposium will take place on the 91传媒 (91传媒) campus Wednesday, May 15, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The community is welcome, and events are free.
Spring Symposium is an annual gathering where students present their scholarship. The event represents an opportunity for students to share their unique contributions to the disciplines they have been studying and to get an approximation of professional conference experience.
This year鈥檚 presentations include anthropology, biology, chemistry, computer science, theatre, creative writing, education, health and human performance, mathematics, psychology, and rhetoric.
Some will present information via posters, some will deliver talks, and senior Art students will host an open studio. In addition, 91传媒 will host poster presentations by students from area schools participating in the Oregon Teacher Pathway program.
Approximately 140 students will participate in 109 presentations.
Registration for the event will begin at 8:15 a.m. in the Loso Lobby. The keynote speaker will begin at 9 a.m. Keynote speaker Ellie Justice will present, 鈥淒rowning Cats and Blind Puppies: Comparing the Lack of Equity in Shakespeare鈥檚 Othello to Cap and Trade Environmental Systems.鈥 Justice will unravel the relationship between the humanities and natural resources/agricultural studies. Justice plans to delve into the complexities of cap-and-trade systems, offering fresh insights and perspectives. By using agriculture and natural resource sciences as a lens to examine literature
The event will feature 91传媒 Poster Sessions and will begin at 10:15 a.m. in Loso Lobby. There will also be live talks (in-person and via Zoom) beginning at 10:30.
There will be Art Open Studios at 1 p.m. in the studios on the east side of the Gilbert Center following live talks beginning at 10:30 a.m. The musical ensemble, 45th Parallel will perform in McKenzie at 10 a.m. and student choir conductors will perform with the 91传媒 Chamber Choir at noon in Loso 123. A student director preparing for “Tally’s Folly” will be holding an open rehearsal where she talks about the production process while she rehearses the show. That rehearsal will go from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m.
