A Productive Summer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Dear 91传媒 Community,<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As I often share, I\u2019m proud to be part of a regional public university (RPU). 91传媒 is uniquely positioned to advance eastern Oregon and the state\u2019s agenda for a civic-minded and economically impactful region that advances knowledge and sparks curiosity and creativity. In fact, institutions like ours serve the majority of college students (opens in a new tab)<\/a>, and the return on investment for students who attend RPUs offers a strong retort to those who would question our value. This article also shares that some of our students\u2019 concerns differ from others. Unfortunately, rural Oregon, and particularly eastern Oregon counties (opens in a new tab)<\/a>, fall well below urban areas and state and national degree completion. We have a special mission. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summer is a time of deep planning for the next academic year and resolution of the last fiscal year. We\u2019re welcoming new students monthly at Mountaineer Days and hosting an exciting mix of camps. We\u2019re planning out our major activities for the next legislative session, sharing our priorities, and listening to others. We are working on our responses to NWCCU\u2019s findings, and perhaps taking a little more time than we have during the academic year to chat when we cross paths in the halls or quad! (This last part is my favorite).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We continue to have great news emerge: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our greatest news is that the Master of Social Work (MSW) program has achieved \u201cCandidacy Status\u201d from the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Candidacy signals our continued progress toward meeting the highest standards of program quality and peer-reviewed excellence in social work education. We are very proud of Director Christine Saladino, Practicum Education Director Dezette Johnson, and the team!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

GO-STEM\u2019s Mobile Maker Lab received a $60,000 grant from the Reser Family Foundation to continue to support CTE-related work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to a generous donation from the Oregon Food Bank, we are upgrading equipment in our food pantry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course, busy-ness (business) never ends. I\u2019ve had the opportunity to speak to the La Grande City Council twice regarding our upcoming baseball and softball field projects. Drs. Nicole Howard, Mollie Rockafellow, and I met with Secretary of State Tobias Read to discuss a voter engagement campaign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I visited the set of Bad Day for Bigfoot<\/em> and met with recent graduate Henry Hoelscher, who is impressing everyone on his first movie set with his incredible work ethic. I read a short story by recent graduate Simon Johnson, published in a collection titled Masculine<\/em>, and watched a movie by current student Abel Anaya.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In light of it being the summer season, I thought there might be interest in my summer reading list! During the daytime, I read some of Kurt Gray\u2019s Outraged: Why We Fight about Morality and Politics and How to Find Common Ground. <\/em>In the evening, I\u2019m reading Kiran Desai\u2019s The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny<\/em>. I just finished Asako Yuzuki\u2019s Butter<\/em>, which I listened to on my walks. Cabinet is currently reading Daniel Coyle\u2019s The Culture Code<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Powering Oregon: 2026 Economic Impact Study<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A new comprehensive economic study conducted by Econsult Solutions, Inc. (ESI) highlights the vital role 91传媒 (91传媒) plays as an economic powerhouse, workforce pipeline, and educational anchor for both the region and the State of Oregon. Designated in 2018 as Oregon\u2019s Rural University<\/em>, 91传媒 generates $388.1 million in total annual economic output<\/strong>, supports 2,510 jobs<\/strong>, and contributes $19.6 million in state and local tax revenues<\/strong> each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The study, titled “The Economic Impact of the Regional Public Universities of Oregon,”<\/em> quantifies the school\u2019s statewide footprint across four key areas: daily institutional operations, capital investment projects, off-campus student and visitor spending, and the long-term enhanced earning potential of its graduates. Developed in collaboration with Southern Oregon University and Western Oregon University, the report studies the impact of Oregon\u2019s Regional Universities on a regional and statewide level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
